Our expertise enables quality-assuring operational analysis that directly examines and tracks all living microorganisms in wastewater and their interaction.

Unique Portfolio for Molecular Detection of Pathogens in Wastewater

WaterScreen is a molecular detection test producer experienced on environment issues and related solutions as for the diagnosis of pathogens from wastewater samples without the need for culture.

Conventional molecular tests in wastewater are prone to errors and inconsistent results that is creating a big potential epidemic problem for public health whole around the world.

Protection of human health and well-being through water quality management is an important goal for both the developed and the developing parts of the world.

The Philosophy

Epidemiological Wastewater Monitoring

Monitoring of health-relevant parameters in accordance with Art. 17 of Directive (EU) 2024/3019 (Urban Waste Water Directive). qPCR test kits and laboratory analysis.

Drone wastewater analysis is planned to utilize uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with sensors, thermal cameras, and robotic samplers to evaluate sewage infrastructure, lagoons, and water bodies. This approach will eliminate the need for human-entry confined space inspections and enables rapid, wide-area detection of contamination, leaks, and gas emissions at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.

Implementation of Epidemiological Wastewater Monitoring

Detection is carried out using the RT-qPCR method (recommended by the EU Commission. The virus concentration in the wastewater is determined via the Ct value. The results are then normalized and the dominant virus variant (alpha, beta, delta, omicron etc., influenza A/B) is identified. Complete sequencing of the virus variants present is also available on request.

In the meantime, insufficient disinfection techniques still fail to eliminate pathogenic contaminants in freshwater as well as recreational water resources.

Therefore, there is a significant need for screening of water quality to prevent waterborne outbreaks and incidents of water-related diseases.

Future

Looking Ahead: Wastewater-based Epidemiology

Comprehensive surveillance system.
Why the future belongs to wastewater-based epidemiological systems.

Wastewater is an incredibly rich, anonymized and comprehensive source of information and enables comprehensive monitoring of public health.

It includes the analysis of the connected wastewater treatment plant and the associated sewer network. All pathogens are excreted in stool and are detectable in wastewater even in very small quantities. The wastewater therefore reflects the entire population and not just people who show symptoms and/or have been tested. There are no more unreported cases. Data collection takes place without interfering with fundamental rights, is more realistic as it covers everyone and is faster as data is not only collected when parts of the population show symptoms.

The Future of Modern Wastewater Treatment

Every wastewater treatment plant monitors a range of routine parameters to ensure sufficiently high treatment performance. Due to a lack of methods and knowledge, operational analysis usually concentrates on chemical and biochemical values. Therefore, mainly only substances that are converted by the bacteria in the wastewater or released as intermediate or end products of their metabolism are measured. However, the (micro)biological processes behind this are not taken into account. This means that the causal biological problem underlying changes in chemical parameters can only be determined to a limited extent and the problem can only be solved to a limited extent.

The future of modern and sustainable wastewater management lies in the integration of the biocoenosis into the plant's analytical self-monitoring. This is the only way to identify process malfunctions at the earliest possible stage and efficiently determine the cause. This in turn means that malfunctions do not occur in the first place, but can be prevented in good time through targeted measures.
